Oppose Bike Licensing
Intro 0758-2022 would require all New Yorkers to obtain a license to use an e-bike, including pedal-assist Citi Bikes. This is a bureaucratic dumpster fire of an idea that would cost New York City taxpayers tens of millions of dollars, fail to address the real source of chaos and danger on our streets, and quickly lead to requirements for all New Yorkers who ride any type of bike to obtain a license.

Not every e-bike, e-scooter, and moped rider is a food delivery worker, but the vast majority are. Silicon Valley companies like DoorDash and Seamless profit off putting these workers, and all New Yorkers, at risk by demanding an impossible volume of high-speed deliveries without training or safety requirements. In addition to laws that prevent battery fires and protect bike lanes with automated enforcement, the City of New York must regulate the companies that are profiting from creating unsafe conditions on our streets.
Intro 0758-2022 would mean that hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who ride bikes every day — whether to take their kids to school, commute to work, or pay their bills — would need to get “licensed” to do so. We must pull the brakes on this dangerous oversimplification of the problem.
